Get Your Website Right
Learn how to create a website that showcases your best self
If "make my digital portfolio" or "fix my website" is on (or still on) your to-do list this is the course for you.
How many times have you come across someone else's website and said "WOW, this looks amazing..." ? From the copy on the page to the color schemes to the email subscription box to the fancy way they have their social media icons lined up, it all just looks good. Why doesn't your website look like that?
You then remember or look at your own website and sigh. It's a miracle the domain name and hosting hasn't expired. You might remember the login information but you have to dig into your email for it. You have a Wordpress.com, a Wix, an About.me and a Squarespace because you can't decide which to choose and became frustrated. The page(s) you do have up are unorganized and the words on them just don't seem to show who you are or what you can do for others personally and professionally. You're actually too embarrassed to tell anyone, let alone show anyone, your website. It's a sore spot and an eye sore you keep putting off because you've tried doing it yourself and it still doesn't look good. But this year, you want things to be different. This is the year you get your website right. That's where this course comes in.
Who is Get Your Website Right for?
People who have a domain name or website they haven't touched in months or years.
People who want to reimagine their website from copy to colors.
People who are overwhelmed about which web platform to use.
People who have read or taken courses on branding and blogging but don't know how to apply it to their website.
People who want a robust website but don't know where to start.
Making a website can be overwhelming.
Even if you have a vision for what you want your website to look like it can be frustrating to work hours on it and still not see the results you want. Learning a new platform can be tough between other priorities in your life. Figuring out what to say on certain pages may not come as easily. You know you don't need anything fancy that requires a web developer. You just want something that looks good.
Consider my own website.
Here's what my website looked like toward the end of college:
This was before I took any coding workshops. I had an idea of what I needed on my website and it got the job done. But then about two years out of college I got antsy. I wanted to show how I had matured in my career and this website just wasn't cutting it. So I set to work.
Here's what my website looks like today:
My own website retooling led me to take coding classes and dive more into Wordpress. In the last two years I've found ways to help others bring their websites to life. Here are some examples:
Using worksheets and video lectures you're going to learn:
The pros and cons of some of the most popular website platforms.
Brainstorm and write copy for your website that shows your best personal and professional self.
Understand best practices for organizing a web page.
Resources to help you build your website on your own.

Your Instructor
I'm a journalist by day and a web developer by night. I love web design and thrive on helping people understand how to maximize their online presence to increase their opportunities personally and professionally. My website at marissaevans.com has evolved from Wix to Weebly to Wordpress over the years and I understand the trial and error involved with getting a site just the way you want it. This course is a longer version of workshops I've given at conferences on this very topic with an online community supporting you as you go. All of the concepts I've learned come from experience working with my own website and the websites of my clients.
